Max Brandstadt received a B.A. in Asian Studies and Classical Studies from Bowdoin College (2013) and an M.A. in Asian Studies from the University of California, Berkeley (2016). He is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Buddhist Studies program at Berkeley. His research focuses on the history of Sui-Tang China’s Three Levels Movement (sanjie jiao), as well as broader issues of state-sangha relations in China. Max received support toward his tuition and living stipend for the academic year 2018. He will conduct archival research in Taiwan and Japan during the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 academic years. He participated in FROGBEAR field work in 2017 (Cluster 2.5), and in 2018 (Cluster 1.2).
